I know. You’ve seen approximately four hundred I I know. You’ve seen approximately four hundred Instagram posts telling you to build muscle after 40.

And they’re not wrong.

But muscle isn’t just about how you look (though that’s a pretty kickass bonus 💪).

Muscle is:
↳ Metabolically active tissue that burns energy just by existing
↳ Protection for your joints and bones
↳ A major predictor of your long-term independence as you age
↳ One of the strongest indicators of how well you function and feel later in life

As a physical therapist, I’ve seen firsthand what it looks like when you don’t prioritize strength. And it’s no way to spend the last decades of your life.

Here’s the real talk: estrogen declining in perimenopause accelerates muscle loss. That’s real.

But it is absolutely not out of your control.

Strength training is the most powerful tool you have right now. And if you’re just starting in your 40s? Not too late. Not even close.

Your body isn’t fighting you. It’s protecting Your body isn’t fighting you. It’s protecting you.
I know it doesn’t feel like that. It feels like betrayal — like the same stuff that used to work just… stopped. The skipped breakfasts. The 5 hours of sleep. The wine on a Tuesday and the workout to “make up for it.” The crash diet before the trip.

Here’s the part nobody tells you: those strategies were never good. You just got away with them.

Your 20s gave you a buffer. A young nervous system, resilient hormones, muscle you hadn’t started losing yet, a stress bucket that emptied overnight. So you could abuse the system and it’d quietly clean up after you.

That buffer is gone now. And what you’re reading as your body turning on you is actually your body refusing to keep pretending. It’s not breaking down — it’s done covering for habits that were costing you the whole time.

So the work isn’t fighting harder. It’s finally giving your body what it’s been asking for all along.
